The short answer
As of October 2026, ChatGPT does not render video itself. OpenAI closed the Sora app and website on April 26, 2026 and switched off the Sora API on September 24, 2026. Inside ChatGPT you can still get clips through third-party plugins such as Higgsfield or Runway, with an account at those companies; their models make the video. The Gemini app does make 10-second videos on a paid Google AI plan. For a video of you and a friend, add two photos here: a 12-second rap video is 10 credits, and the $9.99 Single pack holds 12.
Can ChatGPT make a video? Where things stand
No, not on its own. As of October 2026, ChatGPT writes, plans and makes still images, but it does not generate video. OpenAI's video product was Sora. Its app and website closed on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API was switched off on September 24, 2026, according to the OpenAI Help Center article “What to know about the Sora discontinuation”.
There is one route inside ChatGPT: third-party plugins. Higgsfield, which is listed on openai.com, and Runway can make video clips from a ChatGPT conversation. You need an account with that company, and the clip is made by their video models, not by ChatGPT. Their plans and prices apply.
So when people ask “can ChatGPT make videos”, the fair answer is: ChatGPT can't, but some tools you reach through it can.
ChatGPT vs Gemini for video (October 2026)
Google's Gemini app does make video. Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash has replaced Veo 3.1 as its video model. Here is how the two compare, using only what OpenAI and Google say on their own pages:
| Question | ChatGPT | Gemini app |
|---|---|---|
| Renders video itself? | No | Yes, with Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash |
| Video through add-ons? | Yes, via plugins like Higgsfield or Runway, with their accounts | Not needed: Gemini makes the video itself |
| Video from your photos? | Not by ChatGPT itself | Yes, up to 5 photos per video |
| Clip length and sound | Depends on the plugin | 10-second clips with sound |
| Plan needed | The plugin company's account | A Google AI subscription, 18+ |
| Watermark | Depends on the plugin | SynthID watermark |
Gemini features vary by plan and country. This changes fast, so check OpenAI's and Google's help pages (Google's is at gemini.google/overview/video-generation) before you pay for anything.
Can ChatGPT make a video from a photo?
ChatGPT itself can't turn a photo into a moving clip. You can upload a photo and get ideas, a caption or a new still image back. A plugin such as Higgsfield or Runway may animate it if you connect that service's account. Gemini can turn up to 5 photos into a video on a paid plan.
If what you want is a video of you and a friend, with your actual faces doing something fun, a tool built for that is quicker. That is what the studio on this page does.
Where ChatGPT does help
ChatGPT is a good partner for the part before the video:
- Choosing the occasion. A birthday, an anniversary, two friends who have known each other since kindergarten, a shop opening.
- Finding the funny detail. Ask it for five inside-joke angles, then pick the one that is actually true.
- Writing the one line. The topic box here holds up to 120 characters. Ask ChatGPT for one short sentence with both names and one real detail, like “Sam and Ola, roommates for 6 years, still fighting over the thermostat”.
You do not need full lyrics. The rap is written from that line.
How to make a video of you and a friend from photos
- Add your photos. One clear photo of each of you, or one photo of both. Solo works too.
- Pick a stage. Hotel Lobby (orange), Luxury Lobby or Studio Booth.
- Type your line. Paste the sentence from ChatGPT, tap a chip like Birthday or Best friends, or leave it empty for a general hype song.
- Tap Make our rap video. In about 3 minutes you get the two of you rapping an original song, lip-synced, with two distinct AI voices. Download it as MP4.
Defaults are 720p, 12 seconds, vertical 9:16. You can choose 1:1 or 16:9, 480p or 1080p, and up to 15 seconds (30 on the top model). For something shorter, the Effects tab makes 5-second one-photo clips for 5 credits.
What it costs
- A standard rap video: 10 credits (720p, 12 seconds).
- A one-photo effect: 5 credits for 5 seconds.
- Packs: $9.99 for the Single pack (12 credits), $29 for 5 songs, $99 for 35 songs. Pack credits never expire.
- Plans: optional monthly plans from $29.90 for 10 songs. No subscription needed.
- No free preview: every render costs real money to make, but a failed render is never charged.
Good to know
- Only use photos of people who agreed. Yourself, friends, family. No celebrities.
- Songs are original. New lyrics and beats, AI voices, no cloned artists and no real songs' lyrics.
- Language follows your line. Write the topic in French and the rap comes out in French.
- It runs in your phone browser. No app to install.
