The short answer
To hug your younger self with AI, add two photos: photo 1 is you today, photo 2 is you as a child. Keep Polaroid Hug selected and tap Make the effect. A few minutes later you get a short video framed like an instant photo, with a thick white border that is wider at the bottom. Inside it, sheer white curtains glow with warm window light, the adult you kneels down to the child’s height, the two of you look at each other, smile and share a long hug with your eyes closed, then turn to the camera together. It plays over a soft piano and music-box melody. A phone photo of an old print is fine for the childhood picture, and one photo with you today on the left and the child on the right also works. 5 seconds at 720p costs 5 credits, and a failed render is never charged.
What “hug your younger self” means
The idea behind the hug your younger self trend is easy to understand and hard to watch without feeling something: the person you are now meets the child you used to be and holds them for a moment. Some people make it to mark a milestone, a graduation, a wedding, a first home. Others make it because there is something they would like to tell that child. Many just like seeing the two faces side by side.
Most versions are still pictures made by pasting a long prompt into an image tool. The Polaroid Hug effect turns the same scene into a short video. It keeps your adult face, hair and outfit from your recent photo and the child’s face, hair and clothes from the childhood photo, and treats them as two ages of one person: it never swaps or blends the faces, and it does not age the child or make you younger.
How to make an AI hug with your younger self
- Photo 1: you today. A clear, recent photo of your face and upper body in good light.
- Photo 2: you as a child. A childhood photo of you with your face clearly visible. A phone snap of a printed photo is fine.
- Only have one picture? Switch to One photo of both and add a single image with you today on the left and the child on the right, for example two photos placed next to each other in a collage.
- Keep Polaroid Hug selected and tap Make the effect. In a few minutes the clip is ready to watch, download and share.
There is no prompt to write. The frame, the curtains, the light, the kneeling, the hug and the music are already part of the effect.
What you get
- An instant-photo frame. The whole video sits inside a thick white border, wider at the bottom, like a classic Polaroid print.
- Soft window light. Sheer white curtains glow behind you in warm daylight, with gentle film grain and natural colour.
- The hug. You kneel to the child’s height, you look at each other and smile, then hold each other for a long moment with your eyes closed.
- The ending. You both turn toward the camera with a warm smile.
- The music. A gentle, nostalgic piano with a soft music-box melody. No voices.
- Both faces kept. Your face today and your face as a child each stay recognisable.
Scanning your childhood photo with your phone
Childhood pictures usually live in albums, frames and shoeboxes. You do not need a scanner:
- Take the print out of its frame or sleeve. Glass and plastic reflect light across the face.
- Lay it flat near a window in daylight and photograph it from straight above, with the flash off.
- Hold the phone parallel to the print so the face is not stretched, and crop away the table and the album page.
- Pick the picture where your face is biggest and clearest. A small face in a group photo is hard to keep recognisable.
- Restore it first if it is faded, scratched or black and white. The free old photo restoration cleans it up and adds natural colour in about 30 seconds, and the restored version usually gives a sharper child’s face in the hug.
Tips for a natural-looking hug
- Match the framing. Two upper-body photos of a similar size sit together most naturally.
- Choose an age that means something. Your first day at school, a birthday, a summer you still remember. The clip keeps the child’s outfit, so a favourite jumper or dress shows up again.
- Avoid hats, sunglasses and hands on faces in either photo.
- One face per photo. Crop siblings and parents out of the childhood picture so the right child is used.
- Try another childhood photo if the first clip does not feel like you. A render that fails costs nothing.
Before you share it
The video is imagined. The faces come from your photos, but the moment itself never happened, and it is fine if it moves you more than you expected. Watch it once on your own before you post it.
Please use your own photos. If you make one for your partner, a sibling or a friend, ask them first, since both pictures are of them, and use their childhood photo only with their agreement. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to agree. Never use photos of other people’s children or of public figures.
