Day of the Dead Pet: Bring Them Home on a Marigold Path
Add a photo of the dog or cat you miss. You see their little ofrenda by candlelight, with their photo, their bowl and orange marigolds; a candle is lit, a trail of petals runs out the door, and there they are, walking home across a glowing marigold bridge, back to their bowl, looking right at you. 10 seconds, vertical, with a soft guitar and marimba lullaby. You can be in it too, waiting for them at home.

What's in the 10 seconds
Every video tells the night of October 27 the way the tradition does: the altar waits, the petals show the way, and they come home.
0–2s · Their ofrenda
A small altar on a shelf by candlelight: their framed photo, a bowl of fresh water, a favourite toy and collar, orange marigolds and colourful papel picado.
2–4s · The path
A match lights one more candle, and the camera follows a trail of marigold petals across the floor and out the open front door.
4–7s · The marigold bridge
A bridge of glowing petals over blue-violet mist and stars. Your pet walks across it toward you, calm and happy, tail up, in their own fur.
7–9s · Home
Back through the door, along the petals to the altar: a sniff of the marigolds, a sniff of the bowl. If you are in it, they come to you.
9–10s · The look
A close-up in the candlelight: they look straight into the lens and blink slowly. The frame holds there.
The sound
An original lullaby on nylon-string guitar and marimba, a few soft bells, candles crackling and quiet paw steps on the wood. No words.

What is Day of the Dead for pets?
The night pets come home. On Día de Muertos, families in Mexico welcome back the souls of the people they have lost with an ofrenda: an altar of photos, favourite foods, candles and orange marigolds. In the folk calendar that has grown around the holiday, October 27 is the day the animals arrive: the dogs, cats and other pets who were part of the family. It is a living custom, not an official holiday, and it is kept differently from town to town.
October 27 to November 2. The pets come first. In the version most people know, October 28 welcomes those who died suddenly, October 30 and 31 the forgotten souls and children who died before baptism, November 1 the children (Día de los Angelitos) and November 2 the adults. Many families leave their pet's place on the altar until November 2.
What goes on a pet ofrenda. A photo, a bowl of clean water, a favourite treat or toy, their collar or leash, and a few marigolds. With living pets in the house, keep food and cords out of reach, skip lilies (poisonous to cats) and use flameless candles.
Why marigolds. The cempasúchil's bright orange colour and strong scent are said to guide souls home, so families scatter a path of petals from the door to the altar. That path is the bridge in your video.
The dog who guides souls. In old Nahua stories, the dead cross a wide river on the way to Mictlán, and a dog helps them across. That dog is tied to the Xoloitzcuintli, the hairless Mexican breed, which is why so many families feel pets belong on the ofrenda: guides and companions, then and now.
Will my pet come back? The tradition's answer is a gentle yes: on October 27 they are remembered, invited and welcomed. Take that literally or as a beautiful way to grieve. This video is an imagined homecoming, made by AI from your photo, not a recording and not a spiritual claim.

Ways to remember them
October 27 is the night for it, but the house can feel too quiet on any day.
October 27
Play it beside their ofrenda on the night pets come home, or post it so friends can light a candle too.
The anniversary
A year since they left, or ten. A small ritual for the day you always remember.
For the whole family
Send it to the people who loved them too: the kids, your parents, the friend who walked them.
Two pets, or you with them
Two pets who were inseparable walk home side by side, or you are the one at the altar when they arrive.
Tips for a video that looks like them
A clear face
A sharp, well-lit photo with the face and eyes in view matters most. Old phone photos are fine if the face is clear.
Markings show
A white chest, a patch over one eye, a grey muzzle: the clearer they are in the photo, the more it looks like them.
One pet per photo
For two pets, or you and your pet, use one photo each rather than a group shot.
Try again
Every render is a little different. If one doesn't feel like them, make another.
