Four beats, one clip

What's in the 21 seconds

The whole clip the AI versions copy, shot for shot, at the same cuts, with the song.

Beat 1 · Scream one (0–7s)

Photo 1 is right up against the ultra-wide lens, hands on their head, screaming, then reaches out to grab the camera. Photo 2 dances alone, small, in front of the red fence.

Beat 2 · Scream two (7–14s)

Hard cut: now photo 2 owns the lens and screams, while photo 1 is the one dancing far behind.

Beat 3 · The dance (14–19.7s)

Side by side: from above, from the ground against the sky, then straight on. Loose, arm-swinging 80s moves.

Beat 4 · The rush (19.7–21.7s)

Both run at the camera together, hands (or paws) reaching out until they cover the lens.

How to

How to do the Smalltown Boy AI trend

No filming, no app, no template hunting. Step-by-step guide with our test renders: how to make a Smalltown Boy AI video.

  1. 1

    Pick who screams first

Photo 1 screams first, photo 2 second. A person, a pet, or one of each, one per photo. Two separate photos keep the two of you apart in every shot, so a group photo won't do here.

  2. 2

    Add clear photos

Face to the camera, good light, one subject per photo. Pets: a sharp shot of the face and fur. People keep the face, hair and outfit from their photo.

  3. 3

    Make it and post

21 seconds, vertical 9:16, with the song already on it. 10 credits at 720p, 7 at 480p. Download the MP4 and post it to TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

The trend

What is the Smalltown Boy dance trend?

The song. “Smalltown Boy” is the 1984 debut single by the British synth-pop band Bronski Beat, with Jimmy Somerville's falsetto on top.

The original clip. On 4 August 2026 Instagram creator @elvira.mua.music and dancer @mr_unvrs posted a 21-second Reel captioned “Don't cry. Dance!”. Each takes a turn screaming into a 0.5x ultra-wide phone lens, clutching their head, while the other dances in front of a red wooden fence; then they dance side by side and rush the camera. It had about 200,000 likes by 14 October 2026.

The AI version. On 2 October 2026 the TikTok creator @bellvtrix.ai remade it shot for shot with two AI cats standing on their hind legs, crediting the original dancers. By 14 October it had 10.4 million views and 1.2 million likes on TikTok. Searches for “Smalltown Boy AI” started two days after it went up, and people began putting in their own pets, partners and friends. Many just call it the screaming cats trend.

Same song as Netflix's Monster, not the same dance. Netflix's Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story (released 17 September 2026) plays “Smalltown Boy” in episode 6, “Bed and Breakfast”, over a slow dance between two couples. The screaming duo did not come from the show: the Instagram clip was posted six weeks earlier.

Not the 2024 one either. In spring 2024 the song took over TikTok as the #80sdancechallenge: kids filmed their parents' 80s moves (one mom's video passed 62 million views) and the song went back into the UK chart. That was real parents dancing on their own. The 2026 trend is the scripted screaming duo, and that is the one you make here. Full story: the Smalltown Boy trend explained.

Photo tips

Better photos, better screams

Each scream is an extreme close-up, so the face carries the whole clip.

Clear and front-facing

Even light, looking at the camera, one subject per photo. Side profiles and blurry crops make faces drift in the close-ups.

Pets: face and fur

A sharp photo where the face, eyes and markings are easy to see. The pet keeps its own coat and stands upright for the whole clip.

Wear the look you want

Face, hair and outfit come from the photo, and the dance shows the whole body, so a half-body or full-body shot helps.

FAQ

Smalltown Boy AI: questions

Can't find your answer? Email us at [email protected] and we'll get back to you.

What is Smalltown Boy AI?

It is the AI version of the Smalltown Boy dance trend, also called the screaming cats trend: two people or pets take turns screaming into an ultra-wide lens while the other dances behind, then dance side by side and rush the camera, set to Bronski Beat's 1984 song. Here you make it from your own photos.

How many photos do I need?

Two separate photos, one subject each: photo 1 screams first, photo 2 second. One photo of the two of you doesn't work for this one: in our tests the AI sometimes drew the same person twice.

Can I use my cat or dog?

Yes. Two pets, or a pet and a person. A pet keeps its own fur and markings and stands on its hind legs for the whole clip, like the viral cats.

Is the original song included?

Yes. The song from the original clip is laid over the finished video, timed to the cuts, so it is ready to post.

How long is the video?

The full 21 seconds of the original clip, vertical 9:16, at the same cuts: two screams, the side-by-side dance and the rush at the lens. Most AI tools stop at 8 to 14 seconds. It takes a few minutes to make.

How much does it cost?

10 credits at 720p (the same as one song, so a $9.99 Single covers it) or 7 at 480p. Packs never expire and failed renders are never charged.

How is this different from a CapCut template?

A template pastes your photo into a fixed edit. Here the AI makes the clip again with your faces (or your pets) doing the screams and the dance, with the camera moves and cuts of the original.

Is this the same as the 2024 Smalltown Boy parents' dance?

No. That one, the #80sdancechallenge of spring 2024, is real footage of parents doing 80s dances to the song. The 2026 trend is the screaming duo, and that is what this makes.

Is the Smalltown Boy dance from Netflix's Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story?

No. The show plays “Smalltown Boy” in episode 6, “Bed and Breakfast” (September 2026), over a slow dance between two couples. The screaming-duo dance comes from an Instagram clip by @elvira.mua.music and @mr_unvrs posted on 4 August 2026, six weeks before the show came out.

Is this affiliated with Bronski Beat?

No. RapVideo AI is independent and not affiliated with Bronski Beat, Jimmy Somerville or the creators of the original clips.

Can I use celebrity photos?

No. Use photos of yourself, your pets and people who agreed to be in the video; anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian's consent. Photos are private and used only to make your video.
