This guide follows Instagram's help page Label AI content on Instagram. Meta says its approach will keep changing, so check that page if the app looks different.
When the AI label is required
Meta draws the line at realistic video and realistic audio:
| Your post | Label from you |
|---|---|
| Photo-real AI video of people (you rapping, dancing, hugging) | Required |
| A song with AI-generated vocals | Required |
| A reel with a realistic AI voiceover | Required |
| AI video in an obvious cartoon style | Not required |
| An AI image | Not required (Instagram may label it) |
Meta's own examples of content that needs a label include a realistic video of people and "a song created using AI-generated vocals". An AI rap video of you and a friend is both, so it needs the label.
How to add the AI label
- Reels: create the reel, then turn on the Add AI label toggle before you share.
- Posts: create the post and turn on Add AI label.
- Stories: share the video to your story, tap Options, then Label AI, and turn on Add AI label.
People then see an AI content label on the post.
There is also an AI-generated profile label (Edit profile → AI-generated profile) for accounts that post mostly AI content. You don't need it for one AI trend video.
Will Instagram label it automatically?
It can. When a file carries industry-standard signals that it was created with AI, including from third-party tools, Instagram labels it automatically. Content made with Meta AI tools gets a label too, even if you download it and upload it again.
Meta also says not all AI content contains those signals. If yours doesn't, the label is up to you.
What happens if you don't label it
Meta's page says there may be penalties if you don't label content as required, and that it may apply a label itself if it detects AI. It doesn't publish a list of penalties. A labeled AI reel is allowed; an unlabeled realistic one is the one that risks action.
Posting an AI trend video as a reel
- Label it. If it looks like real people, the AI label is required.
- Only use photos of people who agreed. Meta's rules on impersonation and bullying apply to AI videos too, and RapVideo AI only accepts photos of people who agreed to be in the video.
- Export 9:16. Reels are vertical. RapVideo AI videos default to 9:16 and download as MP4 without a watermark on paid videos.
- Music is a separate issue. A reel built on a trend's original recording can be muted by Instagram's music rules regardless of the AI label. New song videos use original AI music.
Questions
Does an AI label reduce reach on Instagram? Meta doesn't say that a correct AI label reduces distribution. What it does say is that missing required labels can lead to penalties.
Do I need to label an AI photo? No. Meta doesn't require you to label images, but its systems may label an image they detect as AI.
Is it the same rule as TikTok? Close. Both require labels on realistic AI video. TikTok also bans AI likenesses of minors and of private adults without permission. See does TikTok allow AI videos.
